HELPING GUITAR PLAYERS ONLINE SINCE 2009
ATTENTION GUITAR PLAYERS!
REVEALED: THE DIRTY LITTLE SECRET USED BY ERIC CLAPTON, JIMI HENDRIX & COUNTLESS OTHERS TO CREATE HISTORY’S GREATEST GUITAR SOLOS!
DISCOVER THE GUITAR SOLO IMPROVISATION BLUEPRINT THAT CAN SAVE YOU YEARS OF TRIAL AND ERROR
From the desk of Tom Sears
London, England
Eric Clapton…
Jimi Hendrix…
Jimmy Page…
Stevie Ray Vaughan…
Angus Young…
Billy Gibbons…
Every single one of them are, or were…
Fantastic…
Iconic…
Soulful lead guitar players…
But they all share the same dirty little secret…
THEY’RE ALL THIEVES!
“WHAT???!!!”
I hear you yell…
“Aren’t they some of the best guitar players the world has ever seen?”
Well…yep, that is also true…
BUT…
A huge part of how they got to be so amazing is good old fashioned THEFT!
All of the guitar players I mentioned above didn’t become iconic guitarists overnight.
And they weren’t born with a built-in magical guitar skill either.
They had to work hard to become the players we know today, but the truth is, they took a shortcut.
Want to know what they did?
THEY SIMPLY STOLE LICKS FROM THEIR FAVORITE GUITAR PLAYERS!
Let me explain.
We’ve all heard of the legendary guitar player Buddy Guy, right?
Check this out…
“Buddy Guy is credited with creating the flamboyant showman style and blues rock licks that were copied by Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton to sell millions of records.”
So there we have it in black and white.
Guys like Eric and Jimi sought out the best bluesmen they could find, and simply copied their licks. You can even hear it right there in their music.
Listen to Eric and you’ll hear Freddie King licks left, right and centre.
Listen to Hendrix’s more bluesy stuff and you’ll hear BB King, Albert King and Buddy Guy.
And it didn’t stop there.
Skip forward a few years, listen to Stevie Ray Vaughan and it’s hard NOT to hear that Jimi Hendrix vibe flowing through his music.
Check out this article from NPR which gives a few more of Stevie’s Texas blues influences.
Check out that last sentence again…
“He synthesized his unique style by combining a huge number of influences from Albert King and Johnny “Guitar” Watson to Lonnie Mack and Kenny Burrell.”
So there we have it.
These guys created their sound by stealing, or to put it more politely “borrowing” from their heroes.
So if it’s good enough for guys like…
Eric Clapton
Jimi Hendrix
Jimi Page
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Angus Young
Billy Gibbons
…and pretty much every other guitar legend you could name, then it’s good enough for guys like you and me.
BUT, THERE’S A PROBLEM…
If all you had to do to sound like the next Eric Clapton was learn a few licks, then it’d be too easy, right?
As I’m sure you’re already aware, when you learn a bunch of licks, you end up with just that…a bunch of licks.
And that’s NOT how we make a great solo. Those licks are just the starting point.
It’s what happens BETWEEN THE LICKS that’s the important part.
It’s how you position them in relation to the rhythm track…
And it’s how you blend the licks together to form long flowing solos…
That is where the magic happens!
But, there’s another problem…
HERE’S SOMETHING THAT MAKES THIS EXTRA DIFFICULT FOR YOU!
If you asked pretty much any guitar teacher on the planet how to improvise, you’ll most likely get this response…
“Just learn some scales, and licks, and “mess around” until you get it.”
But HOW the heck are you supposed to “mess around?”
What does that even mean?
Unless you’re working with an instructor who really knows how to teach this stuff, it’s extremely difficult to get solid results when it comes to improvisation.
But I’m betting you already know that or you wouldn’t be reading this.
That’s why the solution is NOT to “just mess around until you get it.”
That’s like putting someone who’s never driven before behind the wheel of a car and telling them to “Just put your foot down and you’ll be ok.”
You don’t need to be thrown in at the deep end with no clue…
You need to use the exact same “process” Eric, Jimi, Stevie and countless others used to fuse licks together, so you can create endless solos without ever running out of ideas.
So if you’re struggling with your lead guitar playing, chances are…
It’s really NOT your fault!
You just haven’t been taught the correct improvisation process.
And truth be told…
Most guitar teachers out there (even if they know how to actually do it themselves) have no idea how to TEACH that process to anybody else.
So that leaves most people stumbling around in the dark.
Which leads me to…
THE ONE BIG MISTAKE THAT KILLS NEARLY EVERYBODY’S PROGRESS…
What is that mistake?
Here it is…
They think they have to ‘compose’ the entire solo on spot.
They start playing through their scales and trying to create their own licks out of thin air.
BUT…
In truth, that’s a recipe for a bad solo.
You might get lucky once in a while, but that’ll be more a fluke than the standard.
HERE’S THE REAL SECRET…
When pro guitar players are ‘improvising’ they’re actually playing licks they ALREADY KNOW about 80% of the time…
Only the remaining 20% is actually true improvisation.
Failure to follow that simple principle usually results in generic, unfocused sounding solos that don’t go anywhere, don’t sound very good, and leave you feeling frustrated with your skills.
A lot of the less “clued up” guitar players will most likely scoff at that last statement, but trust me when I tell you…
This is how ALL the pros do it…
They’re mainly playing pre-learned licks, blended together in a cool way.
That’s the real secret…
Once you know some cool licks, you just need to learn how to blend them together to create full solos.
HERE’S THE SNEAKY LITTLE TRICK THAT TIES EVERYTHING TOGETHER…
Over literally a couple of decades of watching, studying, and learning from classic guitar players…
I noticed guitarists like Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, and Jimmy Page using a technique which I like to call “Bridging.”
What is Bridging?
It’s a sneaky little trick, that allows you to seamlessly blend licks together by using the pentatonic scale.
I call it a ‘sneaky little trick’ because it’s one of those things you would never spot, unless you knew it was there.
Kinda like how a grandmaster chess player is always thinking 10 moves ahead.
Normal people like you and I, just see the pieces on the board, but expert chess players are operating on a whole different level, that us mere mortals never see.
And it’s very similar when it comes to guitar solos…
Most people simply don’t know that guitar players are using the bridging technique, when it’s literally starting them in the face!
HERE’S AN EXAMPLE OF HOW ‘BRIDGING’ WORKS…
Let’s say you’ve learned how to play 4 new blues licks…
One each from Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, BB King and Buddy Guy.
Here’s how bridging works…
You might start off your solo with the Clapton lick…
Then you might follow up with some SRV…
Then follow that with a little BB King…
Finally finishing up with some Buddy Guy.
The key is that you build a bridge between each of those licks, by using the pentatonic scale, which is where the true improvisation part comes from.
So your solo would look something like this…
Eric Clapton Lick
~ BRIDGE ~
Stevie Ray Vaughan Lick
~ BRIDGE ~
BB King Lick
~ BRIDGE ~
Buddy Guy Lick
Then, of course, the next time you pick up your guitar, you might play those licks in a totally different order…
And that’s what makes this so cool!
You can be as creative as you like, once you know how to apply the Bridging technique.
You can mix and match licks by different players, from totally different styles, in whatever combinations you can dream up…
And provided you know how to ‘bridge’ between them, you can blend them all together into limitless, flowing solos.
You’re limited only by your imagination.
HERE’S WHAT MAKES THIS EVEN MORE POWERFUL . . .
If you think of the licks as the words in a sentence…
When you’re improvising a solo, you’re choosing which order to say those words…
And the bridging technique allows you to string them together into musical sentences.
You know how people say…
“That guy can make his guitar talk!”
That’s because they’ve used this technique to structure their solos properly…
So the licks become words, and the bridging technique communicates those words in musical sentences…
So they’re actually SPEAKING to their audience in a musical way.
How cool is that?!
And the great news is…
STARTING THIS MONDAY, I WANT TO SHOW YOU EXACTLY HOW TO DO THIS YOURSELF!
I GIVE YOU: TOM’S BIG BLUES SOLO CHALLENGE
Starting this coming Monday, I’m going to take you by the hand for 3 whole weeks, and show you how to create killer, effortless, improvised solos, completely off the cuff, without you having to even think about it.
It’s going to show you how to “ethically steal” your favourite licks & blend them together using the Bridging technique just like the pros.
Each week day, I’ll send you a short video lesson roughly 5 or 6 minutes long. You watch the video, listen to that days practice task, then spend 10-15 minutes working on that one thing.
Then, you can put your guitar down and go about your day, until the next lesson lands in your email inbox on the following day.
Here’s a quick rundown of exactly what we’ll be covering…
WEEK 1: SCALE MASTERY
During week one of the challenge, we’ll be going hard on the pentatonic scale to the point where your fingers instinctively know where to go on the fretboard.
To be totally transparent, working on your scales isn’t the most fun thing to do in the world, but if you want to improvise solos, it is absolutely, 100% essential, so make sure you don’t skip it.
I firmly believe there’s no such thing as knowing your scales too well, so even if you’re already familiar with these shapes, you can ALWAYS be better.
And the better you are at the pentatonic scale, the easier you’ll find things once we get into the improvisation part of the challenge.
WEEK 2: BLUES LICK DEEP DIVE
During week 2, we’ll be learning some awesome blues licks.
You want to look at these like the building blocks of your solos.
When you’re improvising, you’re playing pre-learned licks about 80% of the time, so a having a ‘bag of licks’ you can use is super important, and the licks we’ll be covering are a lot of fun to play too.
You’ll learn licks in the style of players like Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Peter Green, and more.
WEEK 3: THE SECRET KEY TO IMPROVISATION
For the final part of the challenge, we’ll be going deep on the “secret sauce” of soloing: The Bridging Technique
We’ll fire up a backing track, and focus on blending those licks together, and learning to improvise with them. That’s where the magic really happens.
Even if you’ve struggled with soloing in the past, if you stick to the plan we give you in the challenge, you’ll be making some great new sounds.
THIS IS GOING TO BE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TO ANYTHING YOU’VE DONE BEFORE!
Here’s why…we’ll be following our unique Power Practice™ system, which helps you make MUCH MORE PROGRESS in WAY LESS time.
Here’s how it works…
Each day you’ll watch a short (roughly 5 minute) video lesson.
Each video will give you ONE thing to work on. It’s not going to bombard you with a million details.
It’s ONE easy to follow practice task that’s simple enough for anybody to follow.
You work on that goal for 10-15 minutes and you’re done.
If you need a little more time to really nail the task, you take a break and come back later for maybe one or two more 10-15 minutes blasts of practice.
That’s it!
Sometimes you’ll nail the task immediately, other times you might need 2 or 3 practice sessions to get it right.
It’s all about taking these little “baby steps” each day that all build up to a big win by the end of the challenge.
HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL NEED…
The only things you need to get started are:
1. Your guitar…
2. A computer, smart phone or tablet with internet access…
3. 15 minutes per day to follow through with the training…
That’s it!
It’s super simple. You don’t need any technical computer knowledge. If you can open an email, you’ll be able to follow this challenge.
ALSO, WHEN YOU JUMP ON BOARD TODAY, YOU’LL GET 3 AMAZING BONUSES!
